This webinar introduces the Swegon BlueBox chiller, a new product line designed for the North American market. Swegon, a European company, acquired BlueBox in 2010, and since then, the brand has been focused on providing high-efficiency, all-electric HVAC systems, which aligns with global trends towards electrification and sustainability. The BlueBox chiller series includes advanced technologies like A2L refrigerants and is equipped to meet future regulatory standards and environmental goals.

The presentation highlights Swegon’s leadership in using environmentally friendly refrigerants. For the North American market, the BlueBox uses R454B refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 700, making it compliant with current U.S. environmental regulations. Swegon has also pioneered the use of A3 refrigerants, such as propane, in European markets and has already deployed over 400 chillers globally using these natural refrigerants. While these refrigerants may not yet be widely accepted in North America, the company is prepared for future regulatory shifts.

The BlueBox chiller series offers several key features. It is available in a range of capacities, from 30 to 140 tons, and includes models designed for both cooling and heating applications. The series uses vapor injection technology, which enhances the chiller’s performance in low ambient temperatures, extending the heating operating limit down to 0°F, with future models expected to handle temperatures as low as -4°F. Additionally, the system’s soundproof compartments and quiet E-fans make the chillers suitable for noise-sensitive environments.

Swegon has focused on making the BlueBox series easy to install and maintain. The chillers are air-cooled and come as complete packages, minimizing the need for field assembly. This approach reduces installation time and costs while improving system reliability. The modular design of the BlueBox also allows for customization based on specific project needs, offering flexibility for various applications.

Another important feature of the BlueBox chiller series is its advanced defrost control. The system is designed to prevent ice build-up in low ambient temperatures, with features such as wider drain pans, heated trace cables, and oversized drain pipes to ensure efficient water drainage during defrost cycles. The chiller’s two-circuit design also allows one circuit to continue providing hot water while the other defrosts, ensuring uninterrupted operation even during cold weather.

Swegon’s BlueBox chillers are equipped with the Smart Link control system, which enables communication between different HVAC components, including the chiller, energy recovery ventilators, and fan coil units. This real-time communication allows the system to optimize performance dynamically, improving overall energy efficiency. The system can also connect to building management systems via various protocols, such as BACnet and Modbus, and can be monitored remotely using cloud-based technology.

Swegon’s BlueBox chiller line is designed to meet the increasing demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly HVAC solutions in North America. With its advanced refrigerant technologies, quiet operation, and ease of installation, the BlueBox chiller is positioned to provide both environmental and operational benefits for commercial building projects.
