The webinar, led by sales engineer Geoff McBride and Mike Cundiff with Daikin North America, provides an overview of the 2023 updates to the AHRI 1230 standard for testing the efficiency of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems. This new standard addresses inconsistencies in the efficiency ratings of VRF systems and aims to create a level playing field for manufacturers.
Mike begins by explaining that the original AHRI 1230 standard was introduced in the early 2010s, around the time VRF technology entered the U.S. market. At that time, VRF systems were granted a Department of Energy waiver, allowing them to bypass traditional test standards. The new 2023 update to AHRI 1230, effective from January 2024, is more stringent and is designed to offer a more accurate representation of the efficiencies VRF systems can achieve in real-world conditions.
One of the significant changes in the updated standard is the implementation of higher limits for sensible heat ratios during testing. Previously, manufacturers could manipulate these ratios to artificially inflate efficiency numbers. The new standard ensures a more realistic test environment, reflecting the actual conditions in which the systems will operate. Another important change is that manufacturers are now required to use the same control strategies in testing that they use in commercial installations, eliminating the potential for manipulation.
The webinar also touches on how these updates will impact efficiency metrics, such as EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) and IER (Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio). The new testing procedures result in a general decrease in efficiency ratings, with an average drop of 13.3% across different manufacturers. These changes are necessary to reflect more realistic performance expectations in the field.
Additionally, Mike introduces the Daikin MegaQ heat pump water heater, a new product designed for domestic hot water applications in commercial and industrial buildings. This air-source heat pump can operate in a variety of environments and offers significant energy savings, with water temperatures reaching up to 180°F. The system is designed to support the growing trend of electrification in building systems and can be easily integrated into existing water heating infrastructure.
The webinar emphasizes the importance of the updated AHRI 1230 standard for ensuring fair and accurate efficiency ratings for VRF systems. The introduction of the Daikin MegaQ heat pump also highlights the shift towards more energy-efficient and sustainable building technologies, driven by both regulatory changes and market demand.
